Library Bar at Brasserie Ambassade
The Library Bar at the Brasserie Ambassade, part of the Ambassade Hotel, is Amsterdam’s most literary writer’s bar, located in the heart of the Nine Streets.
The Library Bar at the Ambassade Hotel, as part of its restaurant Brasserie Ambassade, is without doubt the most authentic writer’s bar in all of Amsterdam. The Ambassade Hotel has always had close ties with Amsterdam publishers and has a long tradition of famous literary guests, including all the recent Nobel Prize for Literature winners. In fact, it is probably easier to name the writers who have not stayed at the Ambassade Hotel on Herengracht than those who have. The opening scene from Donna Tart’s novel The Goldfinch takes place at Hotel Ambassade. Famous literary guests impressively include Paul Auster, Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, Umberto Eco and Nathan Englander to name but a very few. The Ambassade has long been the hotel where authors visiting Amsterdam for the signing of the Dutch translation of their novels will stay. And so, a tradition began where each author who stayed was asked to sign a copy of their most recent book – and a unique library collection began that today numbers over 4,000 books, each one autographed by the authors and each author having stayed at the hotel.
Luckily for us, since the opening of the Library Bar, we can all enjoy an excellent cocktail or a glass of wine in this most illustrious of writer's bars. We can be inspired by the books and artworks and peruse the guest book which has been signed by so many famous literary names. Look for your favourite author and muse about your favourite book over a 30 year old whiskey.
The library bar, which is both contemporary and classic in style, was designed by architects Cruz & Ortiz of Spain, praised for their recent renovation of the Rijksmuseum.
Make it an evening out and enjoy dinner at the Brasserie Ambassade. The Library Bar can be reached from the lobby of Ambassade Hotel at Herengracht 341. Welcome!
