After a wait of 11 years, Donna Tartt’s new novel, The Goldfinch, has finally arrived. We were fascinated to learn that the book opens in an Amsterdam hotel, which turns out to be none other than the Ambassade, a charming boutique hotel on Amsterdam’s beautiful Herengracht. The story centres around an art fraud. Indeed the title is a reference to the Dutch painting by Delft master & Rembrandt pupil Carel Fabrituis ‘Het Puttertje’ (1654).
