Onitsuka Tiger has been a pioneer in sporting footwear for over fifty years. It all began with Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka in 1949, who established Onitsuka to promote the health benefits of sports among young Japanese people.
Through innovative consultation with sports professionals - athletes and coaches - he produced the athlete's ultimate shoe. In the 1970s, he was asked to supply the official sportswear for the Japanese Olympic team. The shoes have run in almost every marathon and participated in Olympic Games since 1951 and have been worn by a host of victorious athletes. The Onitsuka running shoe was the first shoe ever worn by the legendary Ethiopian Marathon runner Abebe Bikila, who previously preferred to run barefoot!
Today, the company behind Onitsuka is known as ASICS. In 2001, the brand Onitsuka Tiger was launched as a lifestyle footwear brand. This was followed in 2003 by the launch of the apparel and accessories lines. Based on the original sports shoes, Onitsuka Tiger combines its unique Japanese heritage with contemporary design.
